Friday was a day I will never forget. I’d been looking forward to the relay race all week, especially after the sprint, knowing it was our last race, a final chance to test ourselves on this big stage of Youth Olympics. As much as I had thought about that race, I never could have imagined that I would come down with a cold the night before. I was really upset to be sick in the morning when I woke up, I didn’t want to let my teammates down…everyone was looking forward to the race, and for any one of us to mess it up would mean ruining it for everyone. We were all counting on each other. So, as Sverre suggested, I went out and just tried to ski smooth, and see what I could do. If I had been feeling great, I probably would have gone out hard, as I typically do, and blown up in the soft snow. But, smooth was the way to go in the fresh snow, and it turned out all right!
Anna led us off with a strong first leg- she skied 3x2k laps, shooting twice, and didn’t have to ski any penalty laps, tagging to me in 8th. I only lost us one spot, dropping down to 9th after 2x2k, when I tagged to Sean. Sean too skied really well, and didn’t ski any penalty laps either. His first time through to the range, apparently other people were taking more time and missing, and he jumped all the way up to 2nd! He held that for his final two laps, and tagged to Paddy to finish it off. Paddy skied really strong, and although the Russian (who won the classic distance race) caught up to him, the two of them went back and forth, ultimately ending up a little less than a second behind in the final sprint. That made us THIRD!!!
I couldn't believe it when Sean moved into 2nd, I ran down along the course, and sprinted around cheering as much as I could. Places were a bit spread out, and when Paddy started, we all realized there was a chance we could get a medal. I didn’t want to think about how it would end up…just held my breath and cheered as loud as I could…and he held on, and we made the podium!! We were all shocked, but everyone skiing consistently, and it turned out that was the key to the day!! After the race, there were lots of interviews (one with Eurosport!) and the mascot ceremony at Seefeld. It really didn’t hit me for a while, I was so excited, but it didn’t sink in for a while, it still doesn’t seem real. That night down in Innsbruck, we received our medals, along with all the other medalists from the day…that was kind of one of those moments you always dream of, and then to be standing up on the stage and actually receiving our medals so cool…I don’t think I have words for how that felt! The best part was being able to stand up there with three teammates, proudly representing USA!!
Yesterday were the closing ceremonies. There were a few speeches, and some more dancing and fireworks! They talked about how the Olypmic spirit would live on in all of us, even though the Games were ending, that was kind of cool! It was really sad though when they announced that the Games were closed, and extinguished the Olympic flame. Afterwards we all headed down to Congress for dinner, and “clubbing”, a big dance party in the cafeteria. There were lots of lights and very, very loud music, and it was fun, but it didn’t even come close to the JO’s dance:)
Overall, Youth Olympics was a fantastic experience! I feel like I was finally getting used to it and meeting lots of people just as it was ending, but the entire time was definitely an awesome time, definitely a once in a lifetime experience that will stay with me forever. I didn’t think it was going to be a big deal going into it, but coming out of it, it definitely felt like the real deal! Even if it was the “Youth” Olympics, the Olympic spirit was present, and to get to compete in the mixed relay with the biathletes (the first time that’s been done) in a historic day for all of us was amazing. Thanks to all of the volunteers and organizers that worked so hard to make it such a great experience for all of us!
The next Youth Olympics are in Lillehammer, Norway, so I hope now that we’ve been to these ones, people will get excited about it, and that it will be even bigger and more fun than ours was! For now, I’m headed home to rest up before joining my team again to get into some college racing!!
